A Rare Gem Maurice Torian, the founder and Chief Executive officer of Torian Diamonds had always been fascinated by jewels, diamonds in particular. Despite his desire to pursue a career in the industry, he felt that it would always be unattainable and that diamonds were only meant for the wealthy. After marrying his soul mate, three years ago he decided that his next goal would be to conquer his purpose in life. He began researching diamonds and found the industry to be very isolated. After months of research he flew to Amsterdam to the world famous and historical Diamond District. "I spent hours there," said Torian. "It was like a museum." Diamonds were cut and polished in the Diamond District. Torian describes it as one of the most memorable experiences of his life and remembers going into a private room to choose the stone and setting separately. He recalls the diamond being set while he enjoyed coffee and conversation with the salesperson and gemologist. Despite the hands-on experience in the most distinguished diamond district in the world, he still thought entrance into the industry was an unattainable goal. Soon Torian began to share stories with friends about what he had learned in Amsterdam and they suggested he follow his dream of getting into the business. He was still optimistic, and could only think of the facts: he had little money, few contacts, and his background was not that of a gemologist. A few years later he was encouraged by a co-worker to enroll in GIA (Gemological Institute of America). He decided to pursue his dream and started taking online courses with GIA. He also flew to Carlsbad, California and New York to take exams and the Laboratory work needed to learn to grade diamonds. While attending school he became a master at networking and made several great contacts in the industry. "I was amazed at how willing people were to help," said Torian. "All of the negativity had been created in my own mind." Now a certified geologists and owner of Torian Diamonds, Torian says that it was worth the challenge, it was about conquering self-doubt and that he still desires to learn more. "I believe there is always something new to learn and improved technology is creating new methods and ideas for people in the industry," said Torian. |
